Gentle chair yoga for seniors — transform in 90 days
Seated Yoga is a gentle, progressive program you can do entirely from a chair. It is designed for seniors and people with limited mobility, with chair support, clear modifications, and safety considerations throughout.
Starts around 10 minutes and builds gradually · No floor work · Chair support throughout
What is seated (chair) yoga?
Chair yoga is a gentle form of yoga practised while seated on a chair, or standing using a chair for support. It adapts traditional yoga poses so they can be performed without getting down to — or up from — the floor. That makes the benefits of yoga (improved flexibility, strength, balance, and calm) accessible to seniors, people with limited mobility, and anyone recovering from injury or managing a chronic condition.
Seated Yoga turns that idea into a structured, progressive program. Instead of one-off videos, you follow a guided 90-day path that builds day by day — each session with a warm-up, a main sequence, and a cool-down, all designed around consistent safety considerations for older adults.
Why practise seated yoga?
Nurture your body
Gentle, low-impact movements that improve flexibility, strength, and joint mobility without strain.
Support steadier balance
Seated and chair-supported balance work may help build stability and confidence for everyday movement.
Calm the mind
Breath-led movement and short meditations reduce stress and support restful sleep.
The 90-day program, in six phases
A progressive path from your very first seated pose to a confident, independent daily practice.
Learn proper form and build a consistent, comfortable routine.
Increase duration and intensity; improve balance and endurance.
Practise with confidence and integrate everything you have learned.
Longer holds, deeper breath-movement coordination, richer variations.
Advanced variations, balance work, and a personal daily practice.
Full mastery of chair yoga woven into everyday life and wellbeing.
Designed with safety first
Every session uses the same easy-to-remember safety approach, with options to make a move smaller or skip it entirely:
- Flat-back hinge: forward movements bend from the hips with a neutral spine — never a rounded back.
- Head above heart: no inversions; the head stays above heart level (a key protocol for glaucoma).
- No deep spinal flexion: avoids a movement pattern commonly cautioned against for people with osteoporosis.
- Constant chair support: balance work always has the chair within reach.
- Modifications for everyone: every exercise offers an easier and a more challenging variation.

What is chair yoga? +
Chair yoga is a gentle form of yoga practised while seated on a chair or using a chair for support. It adapts traditional poses so they can be done without getting down to a mat, making yoga accessible to seniors, people with limited mobility, and anyone recovering from injury.
Is seated yoga safe for seniors with osteoporosis or glaucoma? +
Seated Yoga is built around safety protocols for exactly these conditions. All forward movements use a flat-back hinge from the hips (no deep spinal flexion, which matters for osteoporosis), and the head stays above the heart at all times (important for glaucoma). Always consult your healthcare provider before starting.
How long is each session? +
Sessions start at about 10–12 minutes in the Foundation phase and build gradually toward about 45 minutes in the final phase. You can pause, skip a move, or stop whenever you need to.
Do I need any equipment? +
Just a sturdy, non-rolling chair and comfortable clothing. A yoga strap, a cushion, and light hand weights (1–3 lbs) are optional as you progress.
